Lake Conway's New No Wake Zones

The new zones are circled in red and marked with a yellow line.

After Lake Manager Matt Horton, AGFC and LCHOA Water Level Chair Jim Fugatt identified 5 areas of the lake
that are no wake zones AGFC now refuses to mark the No Wake Zones with proper signs even though
the signs were made and ready to be installed.

The following is copied form the AGFC's web site on safe boating ....

Improper Speed or Distance
is not maintaining a proper speed or distance while operating a motorboat.

Specifically, it is illegal to operate a motorboat:

  • In a manner or at a speed that exceeds the safe and reasonable limits under existing circumstances
  • At greater than slow-no wake speed (5 mph) in any posted no wake zone
  • At a rate of speed that creates a hazardous wash or wake on approaching or passing vessels; for example a wake that causes other vessels to take on water or a wake sufficient to toss occupants of other vessels about in a manner to cause injury or the risk of injury
  • At greater than no wake speed (5 mph) within 100 feet of a designated recreation area, dock, pier, raft, float, anchored vessel, dam, intake structure, or other obstruction, unless a different speed limit has been established in the area

Here is the sign that AGFC is posting at the public and commercial ramps,

The sign above has recently been posted at the No Wake Zone Areas on the Lake for all to read.

Here is a photo to demonstrate how well the signs are working ......

At that speed they can't read the fine print!

Here is a video on YouTube showing how much the boaters are paying
attention to the little yellow regulation signs!

Here is a comparison between a No Wake Zone sign and the regulation signs.
Which one can you read while boating?

and they are about the same size signs in real life. The green sign actually is a little bigger in size then the yellow sign.

The green sign is placed at a commercial dock, the yellow sign is placed in front of the privately owned docks that are
being damaged by the constant wakes. It seems AGFC cares more about the commercial places than the taxpayer!

Unsuspecting fisherman can get a ticket for speeding in a No Wake Zone when it is marked with the yellow sign!

UPDATE:  JULY 10, 2010

The last round of discussions with Stephanie Weatherington at AGFC clarified the situation. Apparently Lake Conway has no
official No Wake Zones according to Stephanie (even though the green sign above is posted on Lake Conway) and therefore
the No Wake Zone signs will not be posted because there are NO official No Wake Zones. However the boating regulations will
be enforced by the Enforcement Division of AGFC. It is up to every boater to know the boating laws.

You look at the signs above and decide which gives the clearer message. Apparently AGFC thinks the yellow signs are the best!
